Hayden renovation
About the renovation
With the Hayden Library and Building 14 Courtyard renovation, the MIT Libraries reimagines how physical spaces are used in academic libraries. The project was designed to foster connections between people, collections, and ideas. This design sets a new standard for welcoming, inclusive, and healthy campus space.
Kennedy and Violich Architecture used a design concept called “Research Crossroads.” They envisioned flexible, collaborative, and dynamic spaces that respond to the unique research and learning needs of MIT. The design also maximizes the natural light and beautiful views that the community has always loved.
This design extends into the courtyard. It brings the welcoming space of the library into a woodland garden. The design dissolves the boundaries between inside and outside. It creates space for the community to gather and recharge.
